Corneal Refractive Therapy

 Up

This is a new FDA approved therapy that reshapes the cornea (the eye's front surface) for qualified nearsighted patients. It has returned eyesight to at least 20/40 without the use of glasses or contacts. Some patients improved to 20/20. Unlike Laser Vision Correction (LASIK, CRT is a non-surgical therapy.

This procedure, called the computer assisted Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT), is an advanced form of orthokeratology and consists of placing precision made corneal molds in the eyes at bedtime and removing them in the morning. We use a very specialized corneal examination, known as corneal topography. The computerized topographer maps the surface of the cornea with incredible detail allowing us to design a corneal mold to reshape the cornea. The cornea gets reshaped while the patient sleeps. Think of it as braces for the eyes.

At the beginning of the therapy the patients insert the CRT "molds" several times during the week. As the four month therapy progresses, wearing the CRTs becomes less frequent. Weekly or monthly follow up visits monitor the progress, during the initial period of CRT, later quarterly visits are needed.

We would be happy to give you a free consultation to determine if you are a candidate for CRT. Generally speaking the fee for CRT is less than half of the costs of LASIK. You can also budget the therapy to cost between $1,200-$1800 over a 2 year period. There can be long term savings in eliminating eyeglass prescription changes or contact lens replacements.
