Richard (Scott) Hearing O.D., F.A.A.O., is a longtime Florida resident. He graduated from the University of South Florida in 1979. His Doctorate followed in 1984 from the Southern California College of Optometry. He received clinical training at the Los Angeles VA Outpatient Hospital, the Long Beach Naval Hospital, and the Optometric Center in Fullerton, Calif. Board certification followed in March of 1987.

In 1994, Dr. Hearing was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry. He was selected as a clinical affiliate for the Summit Excimer Laser Program and has served as consultant for refractive surgery and corneal reshaping. He is also a member of the medical staff at the West Palm Beach Veterans Administration Hospital and serves as a consultant for their Blind Rehabilitation Center.

As a former U.S. Army Reserve medical officer, Dr. Hearing was assigned to the Lister Army Hospital, Aviation Medical Center, Ft. Rucker, Alabama. He has a private pilot's license.

Low vision specialist

Before joining Visual Health and Surgical Centers in 2004, he was Director of Low Vision Clinic at Stuart Eye Institute in Fla. since May 1995. Dr. Hearing cultivated his expertise in high-tech visual aids by following related developments at Johns Hopkins University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Dr. Hearing is a member of the low vision section of the American Optometric Association and is an active member of the Palm Beach, Florida and American Optometric Association.  He is certified in low vision by the State of Florida, Division of Blind Services.

Dr. Hearing is an adjunct faculty member at West Virginia University School of Medicine. His main area of research interest involves the development of head mounted electronic vision devices.  He is currently collaborating with NASA, Georgia Tech, West Virginia University and Enhanced Vision Systems in the development of the next generation of low vision technology.

Community and charitable involvement

A frequent lecturer, Dr. Hearing has been involved in many community activities including Rotary International, the Awana Youth Program and the Boy Scouts of America.  He is an Eagle Scout himself and a former Assistant Scout Master.  He formally served as Director of Clinical Eye Care at the Providenciales Health Medical Center (PHMC) in the British West Indies.  Dr. Hearing now serves as Director of Optometric Services for Medical Ministries International (MMI), a non-denominational Christian organization providing healthcare in 30 developing countries worldwide.  Dr. Hearing is a member of the Board of Directors of Braille International, the second largest Braille printer in the world.
